What to know about colon cancer, as seen in the RGJ!

Every year as Valentine’s and St. Patrick’s Days approach, I am reminded that just around the corner are two of my favorite times of the year spring and March — Colon Cancer Awareness Month.

Not to make light, as there is nothing funny about a disease that kills more than 50,000 Americans annually despite the fact that it is preventable with screening, but only about 64 percent of Americans are up to date on screening, and even fewer Nevadans. In 2010, Nevada ranked 46th in being up to date in colon cancer screening among the 50 states and 47th in mortality from this disease.

Here are four important things about colon cancer screening that everyone should be aware of:

• The first is to know that you have a choice other than colonoscopy for screening. Although a colonoscopy every 10 years is the preferred option for preventing colon cancer, a second acceptable choice is a yearly stool FIT that checks for occult blood. This $15-20 test covered by insurance and done in the privacy of your own home will detect 85 percent of colon cancers, hopefully at an early treatable stage. Too many Americans simply won’t have a colonoscopy. Although a colonoscopy is preferred, a stool FIT is far better than doing nothing and joining the ranks of the 50,000.

• The second is to know the importance of a family history. If anyone has a family history of colon cancer in a parent, child or sibling, particularly if that cancer occurred before the age of 60, the risk of colon cancer can be 3-4 times higher than normal. Screening then should start 10 years prior to the age of the youngest family member with cancer, or age 40, whichever is earliest. Moreover, if that relative’s cancer occurred prior to age 60, screening should be done every five years instead of 10.

• The third is the importance of a thorough bowel preparation. Do not fear it. Every colonoscopy requires a cleansing of the colon to permit identification and removal of any small benign polyps present that could later develop into a cancer. This cleansing is as important as the procedure itself. Today’s polyp hidden by a poor prep can be tomorrow’s cancer.

Bowel preparations are much more acceptable than they use to be. The volumes are reduced by 50 percent, and the taste is more palatable. Cleansing is best and the preparation is better tolerated if it is split in halves, half taken the evening before and the other five hours before the procedure. Taking the preparation properly can be difficult, but the effort can save your life.

• The fourth is to speak to your family about the importance of screening. Each Valentine’s Day, consider whether you and your loved ones are up to date in colon cancer screening. There is nothing cuter than a couple’s colonoscopy during Colon Cancer Awareness Month.

Dr.GrayThe physicians and staff at Gastroenterology Consultants proudly congratulate Dr. John F. Gray for being selected to receive the 2013 Denise Dunning Award.

Dr. Gray was presented with the award at the 5th Annual Nevada Cancer Control Summit, held by the Nevada Cancer Coalition on May 10, 2013. The Denise Dunning Award recognizes an individual, business or organization that demonstrates great passion and leadership in cancer control or who has initiated a successful program or practice specific to cancer prevention, education or control.

Dr. Gray was recognized for his ongoing vision, leadership and dedication to preventing colorectal cancer in Nevada. He has been the driving force in increasing Nevada’s screening rates and decreasing mortality for colon cancer in the state of Nevada. He recently initiated formative research studies to examine the effects of offering choice in colon cancer screening and its effect on patient screening behavior, which will have national implications for prevention.

In 2008, Dr. Gray founded the Nevada Colon Cancer Partnership, a non-profit organization comprised of clinical providers, GI groups, hospital representatives, state and local governments, community organizations, cancer survivors and their families who are dedicated to working together towards the common goal of reducing the number of people that suffer from colon cancer in Nevada through increased screenings.

This annual award is given in memory of Denise Faye Dunning, former State Comprehensive Cancer Control Coordinator, who dedicated the last years of her life to the Nevada Cancer Coalition and its work to advance cancer prevention, control and treatment in the state of Nevada until a fourth bout with cancer took her life.

Dress in Blue for Colon Cancer Awareness, March 2nd

March is National Colorectal Cancer Awareness Month, and your local digestive health experts at Gastroenterology Consultants are going to kick it off this Friday, March 2nd, by going loud with their blue on “National Dress in Blue Day.”

Be a part of the national movement that aims to stop colon cancer, a preventable cancer, from taking any more lives by joining the sea of blue on this day and every day of March. Invite family, friends, your employer and fellow colleagues to join you in going blue.

While colon cancer is a highly preventable cancer, it is the second-leading cause of cancer- deaths in the U.S. when it should not be this way. As 90% of colon cancer diagnoses occur in those of age 50 or older, it is recommended that routine colon cancer screening begins at the age of 50, earlier with a family history of colon cancer. Often times, those of age wait until it’s too late.

We can’t emphasize enough how preventable colon cancer is and how treatable and beatable it is if detected early through screening.

It’s no simpler than this – colon cancer screening saves lives!
